Markings of steel products

Calamine or rolling scale or black oxide is a more or less thick oxide layer that forms on the surface of steel products during hot working. This layer consists mainly of:

  • ferrous oxide (FeO) in the part closest to the metal
  • magnetite (Fe3O4) in the intermediate layer
  • hematite (Fe2O3) in the outer layer
steelmaking

Calamine, if it were preserved intact and adhered firmly to the steel, would perform a protective action of the steel, but, either because of weathering during transport and storage or because of the inevitable breakage of the scale itself during processing operations, it rarely remains intact.
In that case, moisture penetrates the cracks and reacts with the ferrous oxide layer closest to the surface of the steel, forming ferrous and ferric hydroxides, which due to the increase in volume cause the calamine to detach.

When you come to the problem of marking the product that has been rolled, you have to, perforce, bypass the scale of calamine and go to mark on the metal.
It is not easy to bypass the scale of calamine as it does not have the same consistency and chemical and physical properties in all parts. Automator has designedmicrodot machines that are able to perfectly mark the laminating products leaving a perfect, legible marking every time.
